First Day of School

Wednesdsay was the first day of the school year, and the first day for Madison to "go" to a school. She was overly excited the last couple weeks -- that morning, not so much. I think it was the early hour that she had to get up coupled with the realization of all the new things that day held.

I feel badly as I caused an emotional breakdown in her day. There are so many things to tell her and I forgot one. When she went to the cafeteria for lunch, she noticed the chocolate milk (one of her favorite splurges) and decided to take one because she thought they were free. Her teacher graciously explained how there was a cost for the cafeteria food and paid for Madi's chocolate milk. It apparently embarrassed her and made her feel badly, so she cried.

Makenna is also in the cafeteria but at another table. She noticed Madi crying but didn't know what had happened. When she got home from school with tears welling up in her eyes, Makenna told me what part of the story she saw. She saw Madi crying and thought Madi wanted to talk to me and missed me. Makenna got teary-eyed at school because she felt badly for Madison. I thought that was so sweet seeing as we've struggled with selfishness and not appreciating or going out of her way for a sibling this summer.

We worked everything out. I told Madi it was my fault and that there would be a time that we'd let them buy lunch, a chocolate milk or an ice cream from the cafeteria. She seems to be okay with it now. She was embarrassed to take an envelope with money to pay back her teacher yesterday but was okay with the idea this morning.

Makenna is absolutely loving 4th grade -- her teacher, her classroom on the main floor (as opposed to the downstairs like 1st - 3rd grade), seeing her friends again, learning new things, being responsible (so far)! I hope she keeps the same attitude as she is in for quite a bit of learning and work this year.

Isaiah struggled with the thought of no one but Mommy being home with him. We weren't even home most of the day and he kept asking "Madi, Kenna, Daddy home?" I'm sure he'll get used to it, enjoy it and appreciate what time he has with his sisters as time goes on. I'm planning to do a little preschool with him. He's looking forward to craft time, and I think he'll do well learning his letters and numbers.

Overall the day was a big success. I'm so glad I wasn't emotional about it. Today pulled at my heart strings a little more watching Madi go out the door. Guess I'll always want to protect them in some way.

But for now, they are off on their own, and I'm going to get some much needed things accomplished at home while they're gone!
